As Alumnus of the
Year, Richard
Cordova personifies
the outstanding
contributions of all
the 2010 Alumni
Award recipients.
Richard received a
Bachelor of Science
degree in Business
Administration from
California State
University, Los
Angeles in 1972. He
received an MBA from
Pepperdine
University in 1984
and completed a PEW
Fellowship at the
National Association
of Public Hospitals
and Health Systems.
In 1973 Richard
began his
illustrious career
in Healthcare
Management at the
Department of Health
Services for the
County of Los
Angeles. Between
1973 and 1991 he
served as the
administrator of
General Hospital of
Los Angeles County
and associate
hospital
administrator of
operations at Olive
View Medical Center.
Richard was with the
Department of Public
Health for the City
and County of San
Francisco, from 1991
to 1998, as
Executive
Administrator of the
Community Health
Network. He also
served as the Chief
Executive Officer of
San Francisco
General Hospital and
was a founding
member of the San
Francisco Public
Health Authority,
which created the
Medi-Cal managed
care organization
for the city and
county of San
Francisco.
Richard was
president of the
Southern California
Region of the Kaiser
Permanente Health
Plan and Hospitals
from 2002 - 2004,
with
responsibilities for
11 hospitals with a
licensed capacity of
2,300 beds, as well
as a health plan for
more than three
million members,
including 45,000
employees.
Richard began his
association with
Childrens Hospital
Los Angeles in 2005
as President and
Chief Executive
Officer and in 2006
he became a member
of the Childrens
Hospital Los Angeles
Board of Trustees.
As president and
chief executive
officer of Childrens
Hospital Los
Angeles, Richard
brings nearly 35
years of diverse
health care
experience to
Southern
California’s oldest
children’s hospital.
Mr. Cordova is a
founding member of
the National Forum
for Latino
Healthcare
Executives and
past-chair of the
Institute for
Diversity in Health
Management. He was
selected one of
America’s “Top 100
Most Influential
Hispanics” by
Hispanic Business
magazine in October
2005; he was named
one of “The 100 Most
Powerful People in
Healthcare” by
Modern Healthcare
magazine in August
2006; and he was
selected one of the
“Top 25 Minority
Executives in
Healthcare” by
Modern Healthcare
magazine in April
2008 and 2010.
Currently, Richard
is a Fellow of the
American College of
Health Care
Executives. He
serves as chair of
the California
Children’s Hospital
Association and
board member of the
Child Health
Corporation of
America and the
National Association
of Children’s
Hospitals and
Related
Institutions. He is
also a board member
of ThinkCure, the
official charity of
the Los Angeles
Dodgers, and the Los
Angeles Area Chamber
of Commerce.
Richard Cordova is a
native of Southern
California, born and
raised by his
parents Arnold and
Esperanza in
Montebello. Mr.
Cordova and his wife
Janice have been
married for 35
years; they enjoy
travelling the world
together to exotic
locations. Richard
is an avid golfer,
runner and bike
rider. They have
three daughters,
Vanessa, Marisa and
Jessica.
