Joan Feldman is the
recipient of the
College of Natural
and Social Sciences
Distinguished Alumna
Award. Joan was
born in Michigan and
moved to Los Angeles
with her family as
an infant. After
attending Los
Angeles City
College, Joan
followed her
father’s and
sister’s footsteps
and transferred to
Cal State L.A.,
where she discovered
an affinity for
analytical thinking
and applied logic.
Joan began her
career in management
and technology at
the law firm of
Overton, Lyman and
Prince in Los
Angeles, where she
designed databases
and created project
methodology to
manage large
evidence collections
in civil
litigation.
Continuing to work
in litigation
management Joan
moved to Seattle,
Washington. In
1985, she became a
consultant to the
nuclear power
industry, conducting
compliance audits in
Alaska and
Pennsylvania.
Returning to the
legal field in 1988,
Joan served as
marketing manager
for a litigation
support firm, then
as a director of
continuing legal
education for the
Washington State
Bar. Joan also
taught law office
management at
Edmonds Community
College for 10
years.
After 14 years in
litigation support
and continuing legal
education,
Joan founded
Computer Forensics,
Inc., in 1994, and
pioneered the use of
electronic discovery
in civil litigation
with clients in the
United States, Asia,
South America and
Europe.
Joan collaborated on
the development of
numerous computer
forensic products
and protocols and
served as an advisor
to the federal
judiciary in the
development of
discovery guidelines
for civil
litigation.
Joan led Computer
Forensics until its
2005 acquisition by
Navigant Consulting
where she was
managing director
until 2007.
Joan has also served
as an independent,
e-discovery mediator
for clients and the
courts and became a
frequent guest
lecturer as well as
a media resource.
Among those
requesting her
expertise:
Business Week,
Forbes, the
Wall Street Journal,
ABC World News
and National
Public Radio.
After a one year
hiatus spent
traveling in Africa
and moving her
household to Tucson
Arizona, Joan joined
the University of
Arizona in 2008 as
director of Human
Resources, Benefits
and Technology
Solutions,
overseeing
healthcare,
retirement and
educational
benefits. She also
manages the
university’s HR
technology team –
providing analytic
detail to campus
leadership and
communication
support for HR
initiatives.
She takes great
pleasure in tackling
complex issues – and
in communicating
those issues in a
way that allows
others to
participate in the
process. Joan is
grateful for the
formative years
spent at Cal State
L.A., where, she
says, professors
demonstrated their
commitment to
personal and
intellectual growth
and shared their joy
in continuous
learning.
Joan’s ability to
adapt and improvise
has been a hallmark
of her professional
and personal life.
From Los Angeles to
Seattle to Tucson,
she has maintained a
life filled with
progressively
challenging work,
activism,
volunteerism and
lively dinner
parties, with
friends and family
close to her heart.
Joan enjoys
traveling the world,
reading voraciously,
and is looking
forward to writing
upon retirement.
