Doctors Annie and Tim Siu are the recipients of this year’s University Service Award.  They met in college at UC Berkeley, and have been married for more than 50 years. One of seven children, Annie was born and raised in San Francisco, California.  She opened her practice in 1955 and spent 40 years as a renowned orthodontist, who often catered to celebrity clientele.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Tim Siu relocated to San Francisco with his family after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a hospital corpsman during the war.  After Berkley, Tim attended UC Irvine and earned his M.D.

True pillars of the community, Annie has been a member of the Soroptimist Club of Alhambra – San Gabriel – San Marino since 1957, where she has served as president, and chair of the literacy program.  Both Tim and Annie were chairs of the capital campaign for the new Alhambra Public Library.

Annie was elected President of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and is recognized for having organized the first Rose Queen and Court Luncheon in the city, which is still celebrated today. Tirelessly, she has served on several boards, including the Asian Women Scholarship Program at Cal State L.A., United Way, Alhambra Community Hospital, and the USC School of Dentistry Board of Councilors.

Annie has received a variety of prestigious accolades, including the Cal State L.A.’s Chinese Women of America Award, and the Congressional Woman of the Year Award.

Tim didn’t rest on his laurels either. He has served on several boards of directors, including the Tokai Bank of California, West San Gabriel Valley YMCA, San Gabriel Valley Medical Center, Los Angeles Chinatown Public Safety Association, and the USC School of Pharmacy Board of Councilors. He was on the City of Alhambra Planning Commission, the Alhambra Day Nursery Commission, and the commission to build a new Alhambra Police Station. With the Los Angeles County Medical Association, he helped lobby and pass the Medical Injury Compensation Reimbursement Act in 1975.

As a Rotarian, Tim has worked to help eradicate poliomyelitis and provide wheelchairs for individuals with disabilities. He helped present Rotary Scholarships for “Conflict Resolution and Peace” to be distributed to universities worldwide at the United Nations, and also served as Rotary International district governor.

To further help support college students, Annie and Tim have sponsored multiple scholarships at Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona. They established an endowed Siu Family Scholarship for CSULA’s School of Nursing to honor their daughter, Valerie, a CSULA nursing alumna. Annie also helped establish additional endowed scholarships at the University, such as the Soroptomist International of Alhambra Scholarship, and the Soroptimist Ann Chiesa Nursing Scholarship.

In 1978, Tim served on Cal State L.A.’s President’s Advisory Board and helped to establish the Anna Bing Child Care Center, student housing on campus, the Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, and the world-class track on campus for the 1984 Olympics.

To share their decades of experience, Annie taught at the USC School of Dentistry for more than 25 years. Tim trained at Los Angeles County General Hospital, and taught anesthesiology voluntarily. He is now a professor emeritus at the USC School of Medicine.

Annie and Tim are the proud parents of four daughters and grandparents to five grandchildren.  Dedicated leaders within Southern California’s Chinese American community, Annie and Tim are members of the Chinatown Library, and the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California.
