GREETINGS FROM YOUR CSULA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Marlene CarneyWith the start of the new fiscal year in July, I want to take this opportunity to say that I am very honored to serve as the CSULA Alumni Association President for the next two years.  We will be welcoming new board members, committee chairs and volunteers who will lead the association.  A huge thank you is extended to Carlos Illingworth who has done a superb job as president over the past two years.

In my role as the association President, I look forward to continuing the creative and innovative surge that these times bring.  We say farewell to Dr. James M. Rosser and thank him for his 34 years of accomplishment and unwavering dedication to Cal State L.A.  We welcome a new President, Dr. William A. Covino and look forward to working with him as we meet the mission of the association.   Our mission is at the core of all that we are and will be doing over the next few years “To strengthen the relationships among Cal State L.A. alumni, students, and friends thereby enhancing the value of their affiliation with CSULA.

I have several goals that I hope to accomplish during my two years.

  • Build involvement and participation in the Alumni Mentoring Program.  This program has proven to be a very valuable benefit for students as they prepare to enter the labor force.  There is an abundance of wisdom, knowledge and insight that alumni can provide students as they prepare for their future and the association will continue to lead that charge.

  • Build the Alumni Scholarship Program so that the Association can provide an increased number of scholarships to students over the next few years.

  • Increase involvement and participation with the Alumni Networks, Career Workshops and Alumni Networks that will add to the students’ university experience and ultimately enhance their long-term professional development.

  • Build meaningful collaboration with the various campus deans to further positive and meaningful engagement between alumni and students through programs and opportunities that will provide opportunities to establish relationships and gain resources that will enhance their experience while at CSULA and beyond graduation.

  • Strengthen alumni involvement.  There are thousands of CSULA alumni throughout the country.  Where possible, all should give back to the university.  This institution represents the future of our local region, state and country in a highly competitive global environment.  Alumni connecting with students can go a long way to further our role as a leader in the world economy.  I hope to see an increased number of alumni step up to the plate with their investment of time, resources and talent.

  • Connect the community with the association by partnering with students and engage in one campus/community project each year.   Today’s world sees an increasing number of individuals who want to make a significant different in their community and the association can be a catalyst that makes that happen.

  • Continue to build positive relationships with public policy leaders and their staff at the local, state and federal level.  CSULA is a resource that must be nurtured, respected and allowed to thrive, grow and excel with the end result being a highly educated, skilled and engaged workforce.

Today, I am the person I am, in large part, because of the experience I had at CSULA.  The University gave me the tools, skills and knowledge to achieve many of my goals.  My involvement with the CSULA Alumni Association continues to be a most rewarding experience.

We have big goals but I know that with the involvement of a great and hardworking alumni association staff, our board of directors, our committees and their volunteers, and all that are part of the campus community, we can succeed in an extraordinary and meaningful way and we will.

Marlene Carney ‘76
President, CSULA Alumni Association

SCHOLARSHARE SIGNS ON AS A SPONSOR

The CSULA Alumni Association is pleased to add to its list of sponsors, ScholarShare, California’s 529 college savings plan. And the funds may be used for qualified higher education expenses including tuition, books and certain room and board costs at many colleges.  The minimum contribution to start an account for your child, grandchild, relative or friend is $25.

CSULA Campus News
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2013

The Cal State L.A. community, along with their family and friends, celebrated the achievements of more than 5,600 graduates during its 66th Commencement on June 14 and 15. Like Golden Eagles, the graduates of Class of 2013 will leave their nest and soar ahead. They will join the more than 225,000 alumni who contribute significantly to the workforce of Los Angeles, California and beyond.

Terrence James Roberts of the Little Rock Nine was the Friday Commencement speaker. He encouraged the Class of 2013 to:

Spend time today thinking about the footprint you will leave behind. In his memoir, Jerome Bettis, known to many of you as “The Bus,” suggests that we can follow a three step plan: Learn, Earn, Return. This seemingly linear notion makes sense even in its linearity, but I would have you think about it as a more dynamic process. Continue to learn, earn, and return from start to finish. There is no stopping point; certainly you cannot stop learning, earning, or returning since the needs proliferate over time.

During the Saturday Commencement, James M. Rosser, president of CSULA for more than three decades, addressed the future scholars, civic leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, health practitioners, scientists, and more. He said:

And finally, graduates, whatever path you choose when you encounter that proverbial bend in the road, I want you to remember, and to believe, that you have the wisdom to make the right choice. You have demonstrated your abilities, and you now have the beginnings of a level playing field. You can compete with the best minds in the nation and succeed. Never stop dreaming! Congratulations, class of 2013!

Natalia Gonzalez Named New South Hills
Volleyball Coach

To say things fell into place quickly for former Cal State L.A. volleyball player Natalia Gonzalez would probably be an understatement.

After playing professional volleyball for one year in Denmark, Gonzalez was planning her return to the United States and the job search that would follow. That search ended quickly and led her back to where she was a high school star in volleyball and track and field.

Gonzalez was recently named the head girls volleyball coach at South Hills High School, where she earned All-CIF honors in volleyball and was a team MVP in both volleyball and track and field.
